DISTRACTION BURGLARIES IN MID SUSSEX - 20 MAY 2010
Three distraction burglaries took place in Mid sussex today (20th May 2010).
On each occasion the offenders have indicated to the householders that they are police officers and looking for someone who has come onto their property.
The males are not in uniform and during the second and third incidents have stolen cash and jewellery.
The first incident took place at approximately 12:15 pm in Elger way, Copthorne. On this occasion the householder robustly turned down their attemepts to get in.
The second incident occurred at approximately 1:20 pm in Boltro Road, Haywards Heath and the Third at approximately 2:25 pm in Grand Avenue Hassocks.
Both males are described as being white males in their early 20's. One was wearing a striped top, jeans and gloves. The other was wearing casual clothing.
All Sussex Police employees are issued with identification badges which have a photograph of the badge holder, their name and identification number.
Should you have any doubts about the validity of a member of Sussex police staff who call at your door please ring 0845 6070 999 and the Police call handling
Centre Staff will carry out some validation checks to reassure you.
Many other national organisations have similar systems in place to validate their employees. Even if you are expecting somebody to call at your address but do not
know them always take time to check their identification. A bone-fide caller will be only too happy to have this kind of security check carried out.
Should you have any information relating to these incidents please contact Haywards Heath CID or your local PCSO.

BURGLARIES - BURGESS HILL - 13 APRIL 2010
At around 0230 hours on 29th March thieves entered a house in Dyall Close Burgess Hill. Keys were stolen in order to steal a Honda car parked outside.
In another incident on the same night, car keys were stolen from a house in Leylands Road. On this occasion a high value car was not stolen.
The common theme to these burglaries is the high value new or nearly new cars parked outside the address. New cars are now very difficult to steal without the keys
so thieves have to break into the house to get them. Many householders regularly leave car keys in the hallway normally somewhere near the front door.
At night please ensure your doors and windows are locked. If you have a new or high value car and have a garage available then please try to use it. If not then consider
alternative places to hide your keys away so that they are not easily accessible. There are also several national companies that offer automotive tracking devices so if
your car is stolen its movements can be traced. Officers from Haywards Heath CID are investigating these offences and are keen to hear from anyone with information on these.
Please contact your local PCSO should you have any questions on this or other crime prevention matter.

TELEPHONE SALES TACTICS CAUSE CONCERN
Police have received a number of enquiries from members of the public across the north of Sussex regarding dubious unsolicited telephone calls they have received
purporting to be from a security company selling burglar alarms and which have raised concerns regarding the sales tactics and manner of the calls.
This company has used a call centre to make initial telephone calls to house hold residents, and the nature of those calls has caused concern amongst many
recipients as the caller has asked if the house holder is over or under 80 yrs of age, whether they live alone, purport to be involved in Crime Prevention
and seek to make an appointment.
* Police advice is not to buy from cold caller companies, whether it be at the door or over the telephone. *
Together with good physical security a properly installed burglar alarm using reliable equipment can act as a good deterrent.
Should a member of public wish to have a burglar alarm installed, Police advice is to obtain at least three quotes from reliable companies before committing to any contract.
NSI or SSAIB approved alarm companies can be viewed online at www.nsi.org.uk or www.ssaib.org
